India’s tallest rubbish mountain, the Ghazipur landfill site which has dumped more than whooping 5 million tonnes since 1984 is on course to become higher than the Taj Mahal. The steep slope of trash is dangerous for both men and the environment. However, in a first of its kind move, the Delhi government has decided to generate electricity from the waste-to-energy plant.


Establishing an environment-friendly network the Delhi Metro has become the first ever project in India to receive power from a waste-to-energy plant. DMRC informed that it has already started 2MW of electricity to operate the pink line from the power plant which has the capacity of 12 MW.


This 12 MW capacity power plant is produced from about 1300 metric tonnes of garbage and is the second plant in Delhi whose trial started in April 2015. The South Delhi plant at Okhla is the other plant which produces about 16 MW of electricity.


The project based on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Delhi government and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), besides the EDWPCL is set up by East Delhi Waste Processing Company Limited (EDWPCL).

Talking about the other environment- friendly measures Delhi metro is already producing 28 MW of power from the various rooftop solar plants which have been set up in its stations, depots and residential premises. Apart from that DMRC plants 10 plants for each plant which is cut. Taking care of the environment trains are run without the consumption of any non-renewable fuel. DMRC is the first in the world to be registered by the United Nations under the clean development mission mechanism which has enabled to claim carbon credits.
